Not sure exactly what you need for your trip ? Check it out here, and if that’s not enough contact us!
First look at the difficulty of the event, the elevation gain you have to make, the location, the maximum altitude.
If you already have some experience you will surely look at the weather forecast and also know what a “thermal zero” is, and then you will already know what you need. If, on the other hand, you are not so experienced or are new to hiking, then follow the abacus below and ask the hiking guide for information, but remember that you need curiosity and passion before you need legs!
Then if it is particularly cold, do not be afraid in wearing an extra layer or something heavier than the norm. Remember, dressing is always “onion-style” that is, in layers on top of each other.
Remember that equipment is meant to give you safety during stops and sudden changes in weather, and is not just to carry out the walk in normal conditions. You can get much colder during an extended stop or during a thunderstorm than you would in normal walking on the same day.
- Footwear: flat hiking shoes are fine on easy trails, but on more challenging terrain the ideal footwear is the boot (above the ankle). Using a new boot, especially if you are going on a long hike, is not recommended. Try it on short stretches before setting out.
- Socks: there are models on the market specifically designed for hiking that perform excellently and help to keep your feet trouble-free.
- Jacket: waterproof, windproof and breathable with little bulk; it is the outer layer, what we normally call the “shell.”
- Sweater: there are many models. Those with a fairly fitted cut are the most functional. Ideally, you should have a fairly heavy one and possibly a lighter one, or sleeveless vest.
- T-shirt: comfortable ones made of technical material, very breathable and quick-drying, while cotton ones have the opposite characteristics.
- Down jacket: on cold days it is necessary to have a jacket that protects from the cold. Down ones are the best.
- Pants: long ones are best, and again, as with T-shirts, technical material is preferred. If you wear shorts plan to carry a long pair in your backpack, unless you have to move over easy terrain.
- Backpack: if your luggage is carried by porters or mules it is fine about 20-25 liters. If you have to carry the backpack then you will use a larger one. Be careful. It should not be very heavy and bulky! Always carry a backpack rain cover.
- Always have: gloves, sun hat, cold weather hat, sunglasses, protective sunscreen, protective lip stick.
- Telescopic poles: these help with weight offloading and may be useful at certain junctures (such as crossing a snowfield), although you won’t normally need them unless you have special problems.
